Millions of women and girls alike suffer from violence each year. In fact, up to 70% of females will experience some form of abuse in their lifetime. This violence comes in many forms; whether physical, sexual, psychological or economic, violence affects women on a global scale. The violence problem is international and affects women from all cultures, regions, countries and ages—but there is still hope.
The Big Picture
Although violence is a worldwide issue, it is often overlooked. In reality, females between the ages of 15 and 44 are more likely to be the victims of rape and domestic violence than cancer or car accidents. Violence can have many forms and can ultimately lead to other issues in a woman’s life. Below is a broader look at violence and the different forms it can take:
- Women most commonly experience violence at the hands of their own intimate partners.
- Sexual violence makes women more susceptible to unwanted sex and often results in pregnancy and HIV/AIDS.
- Violence involving female genital mutilation has affected more than 130 million females worldwide.
- Violence during pregnancy can have lasting effects on both mother and child.
